Carolyn Faulkner
Carolyn Faulkner, affectionately known as Mama Carolyn, began her artistic journey in Detroit, Michigan, where, at the tender age of seven, she started drawing paper dolls, designing their outfits, and selling them for ten cents a sheet to fund her candy cravings. She has spent over four decades in healthcare and now resides in Charlotte, NC where she founded “Art with a Purpose Ministry” (AWAP), using art and information to help survivors of domestic abuse and violence heal and transform.
Carolyn's art beautifully weaves together her heritage and personal life experiences into vibrant and thought-provoking pieces. Her work reflects a deep connection to identity and a celebration of diversity, often utilizing a blend of traditional and contemporary techniques to convey her unique perspective.
Her work has or is presently on exhibition in North Carolina at the Charlotte Art League, Charlotte, NC DA's Office, Carolinas Healthcare System, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Foster's Gallery; and in South Carolina at the Anderson Art Center, Union Art Center, Ebry’ Ting Gullah Gallery, and The Penn Center Gallery.

My Inspiration
I draw inspiration as an artist from my faith and life. My work is a testament to the resilience, creativity, and diverse narratives within my life experiences and that of others. My art is deeply rooted in Christianity, the exploration of identity, history, and emotions, often using vivid colors, symbolism, and storytelling to convey these themes. My inspiration also stems from a desire to challenge people, highlight untold stories, and celebrate the beauty of cultural diversity. I strive to uplift, empower, and inspire others, leaving a lasting impact on both the art world and the broader community.
