Carolyn Faulkner

Carolyn Faulkner, affectionately known as “Mama Carolyn,” began her artistic journey in Detroit, Michigan, where, at the tender age of seven, she started drawing paper dolls, designing their outfits, and selling them for ten cents a sheet to fund her candy habit.  She has spent over four decades in healthcare and now resides in Charlotte, NC where she founded “Art with a Purpose Ministry” (AWAP), using art to motivate, help others thrive, and survivors of domestic abuse heal.

Carolyn's art beautifully weaves together her heritage and personal life experiences into vibrant and thought-provoking pieces. As a multi-displinary artist her work reflects a deep utilization of a blend of traditional and contemporary techniques to convey her unique perspective.

Her work is in homes throughout the U.S. and has been on exhibition in numerous art shows in North and South Carolinas; to name a few the Charlotte North Carolina DA's Office, Carolinas Healthcare System, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Queen City Art; and in South Carolina at the Anderson Art Center, Union Art Center, Ebry’ Ting Gullah Gallery, and The Historic Penn Center Gallery. Her work and workshops may be found and purchased in the Queen City Art Gallery and Maker’s Space in Charlotte, NC.

My Inspiration

I draw inspiration as an artist from my faith and life. My work is a testament to the resilience, creativity, and diverse narratives within my life experiences and that of others. My art is deeply rooted in Christianity, the exploration of identity, history, and emotions, often using vivid colors, symbolism, and storytelling to convey these themes. My inspiration also stems from a desire to challenge people, highlight untold stories, and celebrate the beauty of cultural diversity. I strive to uplift, empower, and inspire others, leaving a lasting impact on both the art world and the broader community.
